CHAPTER 12

‘Gentlemen,’ Jake said as he and Mamadou approached the members SCO19, the Met’s Specialist Firearm Command. They were dressed in black military gear from head to toe, and at once Jake felt intimidated. The majority of them were smaller than him, but they were all much more physically defined, even behind their uniform. Wider shoulders. Thicker arms. Legs as large as his waist. They were known as Counter Terrorism Specialist Firearms Officers, and were the highest trained firearms officers in the country. Kept on standby for twenty-four hours a day, the team of one sergeant and fifteen constables, could be called upon to storm buildings, planes, buses and even boats. And they were perfect for hostage negotiations.

Exactly what Jake, and the rest of the team, needed.

‘All right?’ the closest one to Jake answered. ‘You the ones in charge here?’

Jake tried to place the accent but was unable to. Somewhere from up North, he presumed.

‘He is,’ Jake said, pointing to Mamadou.

‘How can we help?’

‘Who’s your sergeant?’ Mamadou asked. ‘We need to speak with him.’

The man looked around at the rest of the men in black, stared at each of them for a second or two, and then said, ‘That’d be me. Sergeant Marshall.’

Sergeant Marshall extended his hand, and Jake took it. His grip felt powerful, and Jake tried as hard as he could to match Marshall’s strength.

He failed tremendously.

‘Pleased to meet you. I’m DC Tanner, and this is DCS Kuhoba. I’m sure you’re well aware of the situation?’

Marshall nodded. It was a soft, gentle nod, but there was something in the man’s eyes, obscured beneath the helmet, that told Jake he knew even more than he was letting on. Jake wasn’t sure if it was just his heightened sense of paranoia or whether there was some truth to it – but he hoped he wasn’t right.

‘Very well. What we need from you guys is to enter through the rear entrance of the cinema, insert a small, microscopic camera – or something similar – through the underside of the fire exit in screen fourteen. That way, we can spy on them and be ready to jump in when we need to. It’ll also give us a clear visual on the target, so when the time comes, you’ll know what you’re shooting at,’ Jake explained.

Marshall remained perfectly still for a moment. His expression didn’t change. His intimidation level, however, multiplied.

‘Interesting.’

‘Can it be done?’

‘Aye, it can. But we’ll have to find the plans for the rear entrance so we can plan our way in. And we also need that camera. Do you have one?’

Jake didn’t. He hadn’t even thought that far ahead. He’d simply assumed there would be one lying around. The lack of sleep was getting to him.

‘Can you source one?’ Jake asked, clinging to his last strand of optimism.

‘I can,’ Mamadou said energetically. ‘Give me a few minutes. I’m sure there’s somebody around here who knows what they’re doing. If not, I’ll call in a few favours.’

Mamadou left and disappeared almost completely, his helmet of silver hair acting like a beacon of light as he wandered away.
